ACOUSTIC GUITAR
MAJOR CHORDS

Picture
A chord is a combination of multiple notes simultaneously. Learning how to play chords is essential to learning to play rhythm on the acoustic guitar.  The chords listed above are all of the major chords in first position.  They are listed on a chord chart, which is how chords are depicted.  They are read with the low E or 6th string to the left, and the high E or the first string to the far right.  The unfilled circles above the chart represent an open string. The columns represent the string, the rows represent the fret.  Just for starters, try to learn G, C and D.  These chords make up the key of G.  It is a very simple and basic key to play in and wont require much extra work to get started.  Practice strumming first G, then C, then D and back to G.  Learning to switch between chords with ease is important to basic chord progression.  Once you have that figured out, change the order.  Play G, then D, then C, then G.  Keep changing the order until you are comfortable.

Try these combinations:

G, C, D, G

G, D, C, G

G, C, G, D

G, D, C, G

G, D, C, D

G, C, D, C
